Apr 16, 2025

Introduction to various types of Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs), also known as elevated work platforms (EWPs) or mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). These are mechanical devices used to provide temporary access to elevated and inaccessible areas, usually for maintenance or construction work.
1. Scissor Lifts
Scissor lifts have a crisscrossing metal support structure (like a scissor) that extends vertically. They move straight up and down.
Common Uses:
- Indoor maintenance
- Electrical work
- Warehouse operations
Advantages:
- Stable and safe
- High lifting capacity
- Ideal for vertical tasks
2. Boom Lifts
Boom lifts are versatile and used when both height and outreach are required. They come in two main types:
a.Articulating Boom Lifts (Knuckle Booms)
Multiple sections can bend or "articulate," allowing the platform to go up and over obstacles.
Common Uses:
- Tree trimming
- Electrical work on utility poles
- Industrial maintenance
b.Telescopic Boom Lifts (Straight Booms)
Description:
Extend straight out with telescoping arms, providing a longer reach.
Common Uses:
- High-rise construction
- Window cleaning
- Bridge inspection
Advantages:
- Excellent horizontal reach
- Suitable for difficult access areas
3. Personnel Lifts (Vertical Mast Lifts)
Compact and designed for one worker. These lift a small platform vertically.
Common Uses:
- Light maintenance
- Inventory management
- Indoor facility work
Advantages:
- Easy to maneuver
- Fits through standard doorways
4. Trailer-Mounted Lifts (Towable Boom Lifts)
Boom lifts mounted on a trailer that can be towed behind a vehicle.
Common Uses:
- Light construction work
- Sign maintenance
- Tree trimming
Advantages:
- Easy to transport
- Lower rental and maintenance cost
5. Atrium Lifts (Spider Lifts)
Lightweight, compact lifts with legs that spread out like a spider for stability. Designed for indoor or difficult terrain use.
Common Uses:
- Indoor atrium maintenance
- Churches, museums, and auditoriums
- Uneven or delicate floors
Advantages:
- Fits through narrow entrances
- Excellent for indoor high-ceiling access
6. Vehicle-Mounted Aerial Platforms
Mounted on trucks or vans, providing mobility and fast deployment.
Common Uses:
- Utility line work
- Street light maintenance
- Emergency repairs
Advantages:
- Mobile and road-legal
- No need for separate transport
