The load center of a semi-electric order picker is critical for ensuring stability and safe operation. The load center is typically defined as the horizontal distance from the vertical face of the forks (or the load-bearing surface) to the center of gravity of the load.
Here's how to calculate the load center:
1.Understand the Basic Formula**
The formula for the load center is:
\[
\text{Load Center} = \frac{\text{Load Length}}{2}
\]
Where:
Load Length is the horizontal dimension of the load (the side facing the forks).
Load Center is the distance from the vertical face of the forks to the center of gravity.
2. Determine the Load's Dimensions
Measure the load's dimensions:
- Length (horizontal side facing the forks).
- Width (side perpendicular to the forks).
- Height.
3. Find the Center of Gravity
- For uniformly shaped loads, the center of gravity is in the middle of the load.
Example: If the load is 48 inches long, the load center is 48 ÷ 2 = 24 inches.
- For unevenly shaped loads, the center of gravity must be calculated based on the load's weight distribution.
4. Account for Fork Position
Ensure the forks are positioned symmetrically under the load to align with the center of gravity. Misalignment can shift the effective load center, causing instability.
5.Verify with the Picker's Specifications
Check the data plate or the manufacturer's manual for the order picker. The maximum load capacity often depends on the load center. If the load center exceeds the rated value (e.g., 24 inches or 600mm), the effective capacity decreases.
6.Adjust for Extensions or Non-Standard Attachments
If extensions, clamps, or other attachments are used, they can alter the load center. Calculate the new load center as the sum of:
\[
\text{New Load Center} = \text{Attachment Offset} + \text{Calculated Load Center}
\]
Practical Example
Let's say you're lifting a pallet:
- Pallet dimensions: 40 inches (length) × 48 inches (width).
- Pallet is loaded lengthwise (40 inches facing the forks).
\[
\text{Load Center} = \frac{40}{2} = 20 \, \text{inches}.
\]
If the order picker has a rated load capacity of 1,500 kg at a 24-inch load center, it can safely handle this pallet.
Safety Notes:
1. Always operate within the rated capacity.
2. Account for dynamic forces when moving or lifting the load.
3. For irregular loads, consult the equipment's manual or a specialist.
