Designing an anti-skid pattern for a mobile loading dock ramp presents unique challenges compared to fixed ramps. Mobile ramps must maintain excellent grip while being lightweight, portable, and durable. Here's how to achieve the best anti-skid effect:
Design Goals:
Maximize traction for people, forklifts, and pallet jacks.
Prevent slip under wet, oily, icy, or dusty conditions.
Resist wear from repeated loading/unloading.
Drain water or debris quickly.
1.Pattern Geometry (Surface Texture Design)
Best Option: Serrated Bar Grating
Pattern: Open grid of steel or aluminum bars with serrated top edges.
Advantages:
Excellent drainage
Aggressive grip in multiple directions
Lightweight but strong (great for mobile use)
Allows snow, mud, or water to fall through
Design Tips:
Use serrations on every load-bearing surface.
Bar spacing: \~25–40 mm (1"–1.5") to balance grip and wheel support.
Alternative Patterns (For Solid Surfaces)
If a solid surface is needed (e.g., aluminum sheet or steel plate):
1.Raised Diamond / Checker Plate
Use raised diamonds with sharp angles, not worn/smooth styles.
Best when combined with grit coating.
2.Stamped Anti-Skid Perforations
Use embossed punched holes with upward lips (like on aircraft steps).
Pattern: staggered or herringbone for multi-direction grip.
3.Molded Grit-Coated Surface
Apply epoxy resin with embedded aluminum oxide or silicon carbide grit.
Grit sizes: 20–40 mesh for industrial use.
2.Material Selection
| Component | Recommendation |
| Ramp Base | Aluminum or steel (steel preferred for forklifts) |
| Surface Treatment | Serrated bar grating, grit-coated steel, or anti-slip mats |
|Anti-skid Coating | Epoxy with aluminum oxide (non-slip additive) |
| Load Capacity | Design for forklift weight + load (commonly 6,000–12,000 lbs or 3–6 tons) |
3.Pattern Orientation
Herringbone or chevron pattern (if using raised textures) directs water outwards.
Diagonal serrations resist slips in both up/down and side-to-side directions.
Avoid longitudinal grooves, which offer little traction for uphill/downhill movement.
4.Drainage and Debris Control
Perforated or grating design allows water, snow, and debris to fall through.
Avoid flat, solid plates unless treated with aggressive coatings and good edge drainage.
Suggested Design Example
Mobile Ramp with Forklift Use:
Material: Hot-dip galvanized steel frame
Surface: Serrated steel bar grating
Pattern: Crisscross/offset bar layout
Side guards: 6"–8" height
Optional: Grit-coated approach plates at top and bottom
