To determine the door opening direction, door opening size, and door opening radius for a wheelchair lift, you need to consider user accessibility, safety regulations, and manufacturer specifications. Here's how to break it down:
1.Door Opening Direction
This refers to whether the door opens inward, outward, left, right, or vertically (up/down).
How to determine it:
User flow & safety:Doors should open in a way that doesn't obstruct the wheelchair user's path. For example:
Outward or side-sliding doors are preferred for ease of access.
Type of lift:
Vertical Platform Lifts (VPLs): Usually have side-swing or sliding doors.
Inclined Platform Lifts (IPLs): Often have folding ramps or barriers.
Building code/regulation: Check local accessibility codes (like ADA in the U.S. or EN 81-41 in Europe) for mandatory door swing direction.
Best practice: Outward or sliding doors, ensuring no obstruction during emergencies.
2.Door Opening Size
This is the clear width and height of the opening when the door is fully open.
How to determine it:
Based on wheelchair dimensions and clearance for maneuvering:
Minimum clear width: ~32 inches (815 mm) - ADA requirement.
Recommended clear width: ~36 inches (915 mm) or more for powered chairs.
Height:Typically 80 inches (2032 mm), but confirm with lift specs.
3.Door Opening Radius (Swing Radius)
This is the arc space the door occupies as it swings open (relevant for swing doors).
How to determine it:
- For an outward swinging door, calculate using:
\[
\text{Radius} = \text{Door Width}
\]
- Example: A 36" (915 mm) door swings in an arc of ~36".
- For clearance, ensure:
- The area in front of the door allows the full swing.
- No obstruction to wheelchair maneuvering (at least 60" turning space recommended near doors).
Note:Sliding doors don't require a swing radius - often better for compact installations.
Practical Tip:
Measure the actual lift installation area and approach zones, then overlay:
- Door type and swing
- Clear floor space
- User turning radius (usually ~60" or 1500 mm for 180° turn)
