Bottom Anti-touch Function And Anti-fall Measures Of Wheelchair Lifts

Apr 08, 2025

Bottom Anti-Touch Function (also called Bottom Obstruction Detection)
To prevent injury or damage if an object, person, or obstacle is beneath the wheelchair lift platform while it is descending.
Sensor Strip or Pressure Plate: Installed on the underside of the platform. It can detect even slight pressure from an object or body part.
- When the wheelchair lift platform descends and contacts an obstruction, the sensor is triggered immediately.
- This causes the lift to:
Stop instantly, and reverse slightly upwards to relieve pressure and avoid trapping.
Key Features:
Automatic detection: No manual input needed.
Fast response time: Critical for safety.
Reset mechanism: Once the obstruction is removed, the operator can resume operation.
Common technologies used:
- Mechanical sensor switches
- Infrared or ultrasonic proximity sensors
- Pressure-sensitive edges
Safety Benefit:
Protects people and pets under the lift.
Prevents equipment damage from unintended contact with obstacles.
Anti-Fall Measures
To prevent the wheelchair user (and the platform itself) from falling due to mechanical failure, operator error, or environmental conditions.
Main Anti-Fall Mechanisms:
1.Automatic Safety Barriers / Guardrails
- Raise up when the platform is in motion or at height.
- Prevent the wheelchair from rolling off accidentally.
- Usually on both entry and exit sides.
2.Mechanical Locking System
- Engages when the platform stops at a landing.
- Prevents movement due to gravity or failure in the drive mechanism.
- Acts like a parking brake.
3.Speed Governors and Limit Switches
- Speed governors stop the lift if it moves too fast (a sign of malfunction).
-Limit switches define the top and bottom limits, preventing over-travel or collapse.
4.Emergency Stop Button
- Allows user or operator to immediately halt the lift in case of emergency.
- Easily accessible on the control panel or nearby wall.
5. Back-up Power Supply
- Battery or manual override ensures safe operation during power failure.
- Essential to bring the user down safely if electricity cuts out mid-use.
6.Slip-resistant Platform Surface
- Prevents the wheelchair from slipping or tipping due to poor traction.
