Tracked Scissor Lift: Overview & All Track Types

Sep 29, 2026

A tracked scissor lift (also known as crawler scissor lift) is a rough-terrain aerial work platform equipped with crawler undercarriage instead of wheels. Its biggest advantage is ultra-low ground pressure, excellent traction and anti-sinking performance for uneven, muddy, grassy, sloped or soft ground. It is widely used for solar installation, garden maintenance, rural construction, landscaping and indoor renovation where floor protection is required.

The whole machine consists of scissor lifting structure, hydraulic system, electric control system and crawler undercarriage. The crawler track is the core component that decides terrain adaptability, ground protection and service life. For tracked scissor lifts, tracks are mainly classified by material, tread pattern, functional type and undercarriage structure.

1. Track Classification by Material

1.1 Rubber Track (Most common for tracked scissor lifts)

This is the standard option for almost all commercial tracked scissor lifts. The track is made of vulcanized high-strength rubber with embedded continuous steel cords as tensile reinforcement, with internal guide lugs to mesh with drive sprocket.

✅ Advantages Low ground pressure, no damage to lawn, brick, asphalt, concrete and indoor tiles; low noise, less vibration; light weight, easy transport; can work both indoor and outdoor mixed sites.

❌ Disadvantages Rubber surface vulnerable to sharp stones, steel bar cuts; long-distance driving on hard concrete accelerates wear.

Subcategories of rubber tracks:

Black standard rubber track General-purpose type, strong wear resistance, low cost, for outdoor construction, mud, gravel sites.

Non-marking rubber track (white/grey rubber track) No carbon black formula. Will not leave black marks on concrete, marble, tile. Ideal for indoor renovation, mall, courtyard, finished pavement projects.

Urethane reinforced rubber track Add polyurethane / Kevlar fiber reinforcement. Better tear resistance, cut resistance, longer service life for rocky sites. Higher price.

1.2 Steel Track (Rare for standard scissor lifts)

Steel track made of steel track plates connected by track pins. Mostly used on heavy-duty large crawler machines, seldom used on tracked scissor lifts.

✅ Advantages: Extreme wear resistance, heavy load capacity, perfect for rocky, demolition, quarry sites.

❌ Disadvantages: Heavy weight; will scratch, crack asphalt and concrete; high vibration, loud noise; easy to damage lawn and paved ground.

Note: Steel track is not recommended for most tracked scissor lift applications.

1.3 Bolt-on Rubber Track Pads (Hybrid solution)

Steel track base + bolted replaceable rubber pads. Rare on scissor lifts, used for heavy custom MEWPs. Combine heavy load of steel chassis and ground protection of rubber pads.

2. Rubber Track Classified by Tread Pattern(花纹类型,外贸选型重点)

Tread lug shape directly decides grip, self-cleaning and ground protection.

C-Lug / C-pattern Track C-shaped lugs. Strong traction on slopes, mud and loose soil; good self-cleaning to shed mud. Best for hillside solar installation, wet muddy sites. Limitation: Aggressive lugs will wear faster on hard pavement.

Staggered Block Track Staggered block pattern, balanced performance. Multi-purpose, works on grass, gravel, asphalt, dirt. Most popular universal track for tracked scissor lifts. Low ground disturbance, smooth ride, good for landscaping projects.

Bi-directional / Lightning Bolt Pattern Gentle angled lugs, minimal damage to turf. Protect lawn, sports field, garden. Low vibration, suitable for landscape maintenance. Less aggressive grip in deep mud.

Straight Bar / Straight Lug Track Continuous straight ribs. The most aggressive traction for deep mud, snow, swamp. Not suitable for finished pavement, will scratch ground easily.

Zig-Zag Track Zigzag grooves. Stable directional control, works well on snow, ice and loose gravel, balanced grip and wear resistance.

3. Classification by Undercarriage Track Layout(底盘履带布局)

Dual parallel track (Standard two-track chassis) Two rubber tracks on left and right. The mainstream design for tracked scissor lift. Simple structure, cost-effective, can realize pivot turn on many models.

4 independent track undercarriage (4-track crawler) Four separate independent rubber tracks. Better stability on uneven ground, each track can adapt to terrain contour. Great for severely undulating ground, narrow access. Higher cost.

Retractable width crawler track (Telescopic track chassis) Track gauge can extend or retract hydraulically. Narrow width for passing narrow gates; widen the track base to increase stability during lifting operation. Very popular for spider lifts and compact tracked scissor lifts.

4. Track structure by manufacturing process

Continuous endless rubber track (J-type jointless track) One-piece vulcanized loop, continuous wound steel cord inside. No joint weakness, high tensile strength, low risk of cracking and breaking. Premium choice for high-end tracked scissor lifts.

Jointed rubber track Spliced track with connecting seam. Lower cost, but joint area is the weak point, easy to crack under repeated bending. Only for light-duty, occasional use.

Track Selection Guide for Buyers

Indoor / finished floor / marble / tile → Non-marking rubber track

Lawn, garden, landscaping → Bi-directional / staggered block rubber track

Hillside, muddy site, solar farm → C-lug rubber track

Mixed site (alternate between concrete and dirt) → Staggered block universal rubber track

Rocky, sharp stone site → Urethane reinforced rubber track

Heavy demolition, quarry → Steel track (rare for scissor lift)
