A mobile dock leveler can withstand heavy-load forklifts because it's essentially built like a mini bridge engineered to handle both the weight of the forklift itself and the weight of its cargo, with a good safety margin.
1. Strong structural materials
The main frame and platform are usually made from high-strength steel (often Q235 or Q345 grade in China, equivalent to ASTM A36/A572 in the US).
The platform surface uses thick, rib-reinforced steel plates to distribute the concentrated wheel loads from forklift tires.
2. Load-bearing design
Manufacturers calculate the maximum axle load a forklift exerts when loaded and ensure the leveler's rated capacity is well above that value.
Internal support beams (I-beams or rectangular tubes) are welded under the deck to resist bending.
The hinge and pivot points use hardened steel pins and bushings so the joint doesn't deform under shock loads.
3. Even force distribution
The ramp's structure spreads the forklift's weight evenly across multiple beams, so no single point bears the full load.
This design prevents deformation even when the forklift hits the ramp at speed.
4. Anti-slip, high-friction surface
A chequered plate or anti-skid coating prevents wheel slip, reducing sudden impact forces from spinning or jerking forklifts.
5. Safety margin in load rating
If a leveler is rated for, say, 10 tons, the actual breaking load may be 1.25–1.5 times higher, providing a safety buffer for unexpected shocks, braking, or uneven loading.
In short, a mobile dock leveler survives heavy forklifts because it's built like a reinforced bridge-thick steel deck, strong support beams, robust hinges, and a generous safety margin - all designed to take repeated rolling and impact loads without bending or cracking.
