How many hydraulic cylinders are needed for towable articulating boom lifts to operate normally?

Nov 03, 2025

A typical hydraulic boom lift requires seven cylinders for normal operation: one on the main boom, one on the auxiliary boom, one on the work platform, and four on the support legs.
The cylinders on the main and auxiliary booms are primarily responsible for vertically raising the aerial work platform.
The cylinders on the work platform are responsible for precise adjustments to the platform, allowing for better access to the work area.
The four cylinders on the support legs are primarily responsible for raising the towable articulating boom lift fuselage and securing it firmly to the ground.
This is the function of the cylinders in a hydraulic boom lift. In addition, the selection of the entire boom and work platform is accomplished by a rotary motor. The mechanical structure, electrical system, and hydraulic system work together to complete the operation of the entire machine.
Self-propelled boom lifts require fewer cylinders than towable articulating boom lifts. Because the self-propelled boom lift has four wheels for movement and the base contains heavy components such as batteries, the overall weight is large, so no additional support legs are needed.
