On a pedestrian stacker, the handlebar steering and movement controls are designed so that steering direction and travel speed work together as one coordinated system, making the machine intuitive and safe to operate.
Here's the breakdown of how they work in sync:
1. Handlebar Steering
Pivot-based steering:The handlebar (or tiller arm) is connected to a steering pivot over the drive wheel(s). Turning the handlebar left or right rotates the drive wheel in that direction.
Mechanical or electric assist:
On basic models, the tiller mechanically rotates the wheel via a direct linkage.
On advanced models, turning the tiller sends an electronic signal to an electric steering motor that changes wheel orientation.
Return-to-center function:A spring or electronic centering system brings the handlebar back to a neutral position when released.
2. Movement Controls on the Handlebar
Throttle lever (or butterfly switch):Located on both sides of the handlebar so the operator can control forward/reverse with either hand.
Proportional speed control:The more you press the throttle lever, the faster the truck moves. Speed is electronically linked to tiller angle - when the tiller is too upright or too low, maximum speed is reduced for safety.
Direction sync:
Forward on the lever = moves in the direction the forks are pointing.
Reverse on the lever = moves toward the operator.
3. How Steering and Movement Sync
Drive wheel integration:Since steering and traction are both through the same powered drive wheel, turning the handlebar not only changes direction but also determines the arc of travel when the drive motor is running.
Speed reduction in turns:The control system automatically limits top speed during sharp steering angles to prevent tipping or load instability.
Deadman switch:Movement only occurs when the operator is actively holding the tiller down within the operating zone.If released, the stacker stops immediately.
Turtle creep mode:A button on the tiller allows slow movement even with the handlebar in a near-vertical position - useful in tight spaces where you can't extend the tiller fully.
